PIG FARMING
Pig farming is the rearing of domesticated pigs for consumption or commercial purposes(sales for income). It is a branch of ANIMAL HUSBANDRY(livestock rearing)PIGS
Pigs are non ruminant animals(animals without complex stomach)
ZOOLOGICAL NAME OF PIG: Sus scruffa
Sus vitallus
these the two common species of pig, they are mostly reared in Asia,Europe and North America.
with CHINA as the country which is more involved in the production.
Pig production is very lucrative and very large business in the three countries above. They are also found in some countries in West Africa eg Nigeria , however unlike other domesticated animals pigs are not allowed and popular in some regions due to the following reasons:
- Local beliefs or traditions, including religion
- The breed or type of pig available to the farm
- Local diseases or conditions that affect pig growth
- Local requirements, including government zoning and/or land use laws
- Local and global market conditions and demand
- Traditional farming styles and methods
- Management in terms of waste
- Social reasons
SYSTEM OF PIG PRODUCTION
1) INTENSIVE SYSTEM- This is a system whereby pigs are kept in a well confined environment to avoid roaming about,
-in this type of system productivity of the domesticated pig is always high depending the breed
-animals are not always prone to diseases unlike extensive method.
The only disadvantage attached to this type of system is that pigs are not allowed to exercise around leading to feebleness
2) EXTENSIVE SYSTEM
-This involves rearing the pig in an open space i.e they are free to roam about or exercise about
Disadvantages -productivity is always low
-lack of proper feeding of pigs leading to weight loss
-animals are prone to diseases
-pigs can be stolen
-killed by moving vehicle while roaming.
3) SEMI INTENSIVE SYSTEM
- This system is half intensive in the sense that pigs are allowed to comeback into sty after the close of the day for resting and half extensive in the sense that the farmer allows the pigs to roam about and source for feed for themselves during the day. (back yard rearing)
- Productivity is higher than that of intensive because pigs exercise about during the day and have access to medication after they return.
Disadvantages- pigs can be stolen
- killed buy vehicle will roaming
BUILDING PIG STY
You should always take note of this factors- water supply
-drainage
1) get a place that has a shelter and well fenced ( you can use a wood and wire gauze to form the fence)
2) make a wallow(a place in the sty filled with dirty water or mud ) at the far end of the sty i.e not close to where the pig sleeps and eats (this should be wide)
4) locate a side for their feed and rest.
A pig sty should be kept clean, dry and neat
PIGS ARE NOT NATURALLY DIRTY ANIMALS THEY ONLY WALLOW IN MUD TO KEEP THEIR BODY TEMPERATURE NORMAL BECAUSE THEY LACK SWEAT PORES
